The Hidden Cancer
Why is colon cancer the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S? Because these small tumors, located in the lower part of the intestine have no symptoms at all. The scary fact is that you may be walking around with no idea that you have multiple tumors. Worse, these tumors have developed slowly over years…. years that with a medical test, that may sometimes feel awkward, would have prevented an annual 50,000 deaths in the United States.
Don’t worry! There are tests available to detect colon cancer long before you will ever experience any of its deadly symptoms. The gold standard is the colonoscopy. What is a colonoscopy? Less invasive is a procedure where your DNA is analyzed by a stool sample. Our office works with ColoGuard where a kit is sent to your home. One may find and purchase a ColoGuard kit at the ColoGuard website.
Do not wait! Everyone by age 50 should have the test done, and sooner for high risk patients with a history of Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, family history of colon cancer, or if you are obese and having addictions to smoking and alcohol. Colon cancer is very curable when detected long before the symptoms appear.
Colonoscopy – how awkward is it? One must be prepared before the procedure. WebMD describes in the article here on what to do.
Stool specimen – how easy is it? Refer to the ColoGuard website mentioned earlier.
